Cupertino Library Foundation Announces 'Cupertino Silicon Valley Reads 2010'

Saturday, March 20, 2010, Cupertino Community Hall

A variety of activities are planned on the day including:

1:30 - 2:30      Presentation by local noted author, David Mas Masumoto
2:30 - 3:00      Panel Discussion and Q&A with Mas
3:00 - 3:30      Essay Contest Winners announced and honored

Cupertino Adults and Students in Grades 9 - 12 are invited to participate in an Essay Contest that leads into the Cupertino Silicon Valley Reads 2010 March 20th event.

Essay Topic on the 2010 Silicon Valley Reads Book Selection "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" by Michael Pollan

"According to author Michael Pollan, the rise of 'nutritionism' has vastly complicated the lives of American eaters without doing anything for our health, except possibly to make it worse...Pollan outlines the challenge and offers a straightforward manifesto - 'Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.'"

Two Categories: Adults and Teens
Grand Prizes $500, 2-Winners, 1 Adult and 1 Teen

2nd Place Prizes $300, 2-Winners, 1 Adult and 1 Teen

Contest Registration & Rules

Entry Deadline: Sunday February 28, 2010 Cupertino Adults and Students in Grades 9 - 12 are encouraged to participate. Entries must be submitted by February 28, 2010, and Contest Guidelines and Entry Form are available at www.cupertinolibrary.org/SVRCupertino. Winners will be announced publicly on March 20.

Silicon Valley Reads is recommending Children's Companion Books for Silicon Valley Reads 2010: Tops & Bottoms, adapted and illustrated by Janet Stevens, and SeedFolks By Paul Fleischman.

The Cupertino Library Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization. Its stated purpose is To raise money to enhance the Library. It seeks major donations from corporations and the business community and from other foundations as well as individual donations and planned gifts and bequests. Most recently, and again at Council's request, the Foundation has successfully concluded a 4-year effort to raise from the community the $1.2 million to help furnish the new Library so that Council could construct the best building possible with City funding.
